Raising a Hand

Kevin Black and the “Raising A Hand” Project: A Tribute of Music and Hope

Country artist Kevin Black, brother of Clint Black, transformed personal tragedy into a mission of hope after losing his daughter, Courtney, to Rett syndrome in 2003. In her memory, Kevin partnered with photographer Dave Clements to create the “Raising A Hand” project—a powerful blend of music, photography, and advocacy aimed at raising awareness and funds for Rett syndrome research.

About Rett Syndrome

Rett syndrome is a rare neurological disorder, primarily affecting girls, caused by mutations in the MECP2 gene on the X chromosome. Typically, children develop normally for the first 6 to 18 months before experiencing a regression in motor and communication skills. Symptoms include loss of speech, repetitive hand movements, mobility challenges, seizures, and breathing irregularities. While not degenerative, Rett syndrome leads to lifelong physical and cognitive impairments, necessitating constant care.

The “Raising A Hand” Initiative

The “Raising A Hand” project encompasses a series of coffee table books featuring over 700 photographs of renowned musicians captured mid-performance, each artist symbolically raising a hand in support of the cause. Artists featured include Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Gene Simmons, and Stevie Nicks. Proceeds from the book sales are donated to the International Rett Syndrome Foundation to support ongoing research and advocacy efforts.

In addition to the books, Kevin Black composed and released the heartfelt song “Raising A Hand,” with all of the proceeds from its sales contributing to Rett syndrome research.
